Understanding Color Formats
HEX (Hexadecimal)
HEX colors use a 6-digit code representing Red, Green, and Blue values in hexadecimal. Format: #RRGGBB (e.g., #FF5733). Each pair ranges from 00 to FF. This is the most common format for web design and CSS.
RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
RGB defines colors using three values from 0-255 for Red, Green, and Blue. Format: rgb(255, 87, 51). This is the standard for digital displays and is intuitive for adjusting individual color channels.
HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)
HSL represents colors using Hue (0-360°), Saturation (0-100%), and Lightness (0-100%). Format: hsl(14, 100%, 60%). This is often more intuitive for creating color schemes and adjusting brightness.
Color Format Comparison
| Format | Example | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| HEX | #FF5733 | Web development, CSS |
| RGB | rgb(255, 87, 51) | Digital design, programming |
| HSL | hsl(14, 100%, 60%) | Color schemes, adjustments |
Tips for Working with Colors
- Use HSL for variations: Adjust lightness for shades of the same color
- HEX for code: Most compact format for stylesheets
- Check contrast: Ensure text is readable against backgrounds
- Consider accessibility: Test colors for color blindness compatibility
