What is Base64?
Base64 is an encoding scheme that converts binary data into ASCII text format. It uses 64 characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /) to represent data, making it safe to transmit through text-based systems like email or URLs.
How Base64 Works
Base64 encoding takes 3 bytes (24 bits) of binary data and converts them into 4 ASCII characters. Each character represents 6 bits of the original data. If the input isn't divisible by 3 bytes, padding (=) is added.
Common Uses of Base64
- Email attachments: MIME encoding for binary files
- Data URIs: Embedding images directly in HTML/CSS
- API data: Transmitting binary data in JSON
- Basic authentication: HTTP authorization headers
- Cookies: Storing complex data in browser cookies
Base64 Encoding Example
| Original Text | Base64 Encoded |
|---|---|
| Hello | SGVsbG8= |
| World | V29ybGQ= |
| Base64 | QmFzZTY0 |
Important Notes
- Not encryption: Base64 is encoding, not security. Anyone can decode it.
- Size increase: Base64 output is about 33% larger than the input
- UTF-8 support: This tool properly handles Unicode characters
