"This file can't be opened" — the iPhone HEIC problem

Ever moved an iPhone photo to a PC or tried to upload it to a forum or job site, only for it to refuse to open? The cause is the iPhone's default format, HEIC. It's efficient (about half the size of JPG) but Windows, older browsers and many government/job sites still don't support it. Convert to JPG and it opens everywhere.

How to use

  1. Drag or choose HEIC files (multiple at once).
  2. Pick output format (JPG/PNG) and quality.
  3. Download each result. The first run briefly loads the decoder.

Use it with

  • Resume photo: convert the studio HEIC to JPG, then fit the spec with ID Photo Crop.
  • Upload-ready: after converting, shrink with the Image Resizer.
  • Submissions: convert several to JPG, then bundle with PDF Tools.

Permanent fix: change the iPhone capture format

Tired of converting? On iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to save as JPG from the start. Photos already taken as HEIC still need converting here.

FAQ

Q. Why won't iPhone photos open on PC/forums?

They're saved as HEIC, which Windows, older browsers and many sites don't support. JPG opens everywhere.

Q. Are photos uploaded?

No — conversion runs in your browser, so private photos stay private. Many rival converters upload to a server; this one doesn't.
